Gen Fu : Does he still have it?

I know I'm super late with a new blog post but was finishing up my summer semester so had to focus on that. But now that it's OVER it's time to get back in here and bring you guys more DoA knowledge. This blog focuses on how I feel about Gen Fu as he is who I will be using in any event I go forward with (so far anyway).

So recently I have been playing a lot of DoA as I'm likely going to TFC to compete in that. I've decided to go back to my main Gen Fu since I'm going to attempt to at least be somewhat competent while I'm competing.

Right out the gate I noticed without his signature 3p+k he is heavily handicapped. That move was such a core attack of the character and he no longer has this so his defensive and offensive capabilities are highly torn down. That's not to say he is an awful character and can't win but that it's very hard to win with him now assuming the other player knows how to fight Gen Fu.

So let's talk about what he has against him that makes it hard to win:

No low game at all. He has 1p (tracking attack), 1k, and 2f+k (also tracking). 1p is the best one cause it's quicker but overall his low game is highly lacking. 1k gives small advantage but overall not much to work with because of it's very short range. 2f+k is decent but nothing to really rely on as it's not that fast and you can struggle out of the stun to block / attack. This is probably the biggest hit to the character now since he no longer has 3p+k and I'll explain why later in the blog.

His ability to crush attacks aren't the best anymore as well. He has 3p now but it doesn't stun on normal hit and to get a counter hit the opponent had to be doing a string or attacking out of disadvantage themselves. This means on the defense you have to use parries a lot more or just holds in general. Basically you have to take more risk to be able to get your damage. These things are in my opinion his biggest problems as he probably has some other quirky things but it's not that serious to talk about.

However he does have some good points as well:

Still has one of the fastest mid attacks in the game. So in neutral instances he has a strong chance of landing a hit because of 6p in addition to his crushes and parries. The hard part about Gen Fu now is getting a hit but when he does get one he has a plethora of attacks to drop your health bar without you actually being able to counter or you only get 1 chance.

4p+k- - - this attack causes one of the new stuns called the "faint stun". In some instances you can get a full launcher for crazy damage but in general you get 64p for FREE into 16p for a combo. Not to mention this move can evade some attacks at certain ranges and it's actually safe too. By far one of my favorite moves to use.

3k - - - Still as good as always and a staple for his spacing game. Not to mention it helps to keep your opponent honest from just trying to hold mid punches all game. The actual string to this attack has many holes to it but to an opponent who doesn't know you will easily crush your opponent with it.

6f+k - - - His best launcher by far as you get the most for your buck with this move and it's hold resistant meaning they can throw you after countering but won't get advanced holds that could potentially do a lot more damage. Not to mention if they low hold in stun and you do this launcher you get full height which means it's party time.

4p6p - - - A great move to to catch players ducking or errand pokes. It's a fairly simple attack and both attacks are mid. The thing that is great about it is it has a ender so people will be hesitant to try to throw you or attack right away which allows a fuzzy guard. It's also a 2 in 1 meaning if they block the first attack have to block the second and on NH it's pretty much a free stun.

Lastly his parries have gotten a great upgrade for actually landing them. You can actually get a free 6k which is kind of a big deal as before all you got was a mix up. So now you get to actually get a head start to getting your post stun mix ups going. The hardest thing about this character now is getting that counter hit so this is a welcome upgrade.

Overall however I think the character has to work extra hard to win. Only way he looks top tier is if you hitting all your buttons and he is able to get many counter hits on you. But if you think of it that way, wouldn't that make every character really good?

Thanks for reading! As always comments, suggestions, etc are welcome!
